For over 100
years, the oldest cheese market in Little Italy continues to serve its
community by making the finest quality ricotta and mozzarella. The
original store was established in 1892 by my great grandmother, Pina
Alleva, shortly after she emigrated here from Benevento, Italy. |
| The store,
located at the corner of Grand and Mulberry Streets, continues to use
Pina's original recipes for fresh cheeses. My grandfather, Henry Alleva,
and his sister, known to all as Aunt Erma, continued the tradition.
Today, the tradition is carried on by my father, Robert Alleva, Sr., and
myself. I am proud to be part of the fourth generation of this
family-owned business. |
| As you enter the
shop, you take a step back in time. The walls are covered with its
original tiles and tin ceiling. There are painted glass signs advertising
"Burro e Uova" and "Latticini di Nostra Produzione", and one points out
that ricotta and mozzarella are "Sono Fatte con Puro Latte", translation,
made with pure milk. As your nose fills with the aroma of imported
cheeses, salamis, and sausages hanging about, your eyes are soaking in
the display of imported olive oils and Italian products and suddenly, you
can feel the flavor of Italy. |
 |
My father and I continue the
ALLEVA tradition of providing the finest Italian cheeses. Who knows,
maybe one of my three children will join us and feel the pride and love
when I say,
"We have the oldest Italian cheese store
in America!"
Buon
Appetito
